eff Hewett has been a shareholder of the firm since 1997.   His practice is concentrated in the representation of financial institutions and oil and gas companies. 

Hewett has represented banks of all sizes for over twenty years.   This area of his practice encompasses all phases of negotiating and documenting commercial credits and workout arrangements.   His work in commercial credits includes numerous transactions involving acquisitions of producing oil and gas properties and commercial real estate.  In addition to preparing the loan documents for each transaction, he has worked extensively in documenting title and  preparing exhibits. 

Hewett has also  been active in all aspects of natural resource representation in Texas and New Mexico, including preparing federal, state, and fee title opinions; conducting due diligence in connection with acquisitions and sales of producing properties; and documenting all phases of oil and gas transactions.  His work in the area of acquisitions and divestitures includes the negotiation and drafting of purchase and sale agreements, coordinating due diligence reviews in data rooms and the offices of various recording authorities, preparing acquisition title opinions, preparing notices of title and environmental defects, and reviewing and responding to submitted curative information.  The acquisitions in which he has been involved have ranged from only one property up to several hundred.

Originally admitted to the bar in Kansas in 1981, Hewett has since been admitted to the State Bar of Texas in 1982 and the State Bar of New Mexico in 1989.  He is also a member of the Midland County Bar Association and the Texas Association of Bank Counsel, as well as a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation.

In 1978,  Hewett received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Kansas, where he was admitted to Phi Beta Kappa.  Continuing his education at the same university, he earned his law degree in 1981.  He served as a Note and Comment Editor for The Kansas Law Review.

In addition to his professional work, Hewett has been involved in the civic life of Midland throughout his career.  A past president of the Arts Assembly of Midland, the Museum of the Southwest, and The Racquet Club, he also a former member of the directing boards of the Community Children’s Clinic, Midland Opera Theater, St. Nicholas’ Episcopal Church, Trinity School of Midland, the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity, and Cowan Performing Arts Series at Midland College.  He currently serves on the Citizens Advisory Committee for the Wagner-Noel Performing Arts Center to be constructed on the campus of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
