Will Abney is a shareholder who joined the Firm in 2002. His practice is concentrated in oil and gas law, and he is Board Certified in Oil, Gas and Mineral Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Abney is licensed to practice law in both Texas and New Mexico.

Abney’s practice is concentrated in the representation of oil and gas companies, and encompasses all areas of oil and gas law. It includes the preparation of title opinions, the documentation of all phases of oil and gas transactions, and the coordination of various activities related to the acquisition and divestiture of oil and gas properties.

Abney has prepared title opinions covering federal, state and fee lands, and has drafted and negotiated agreements relative to all phases of the development of oil and gas properties, including leases, exploration and development agreements, farmout agreements, seismic agreements, operating agreements, and master service agreements. In facilitating the acquisition and divestiture of oil and gas properties, Abney has drafted and negotiated purchase and sale agreements, coordinated due diligence reviews of title matters, and prepared acquisition and financing opinions. Abney also has experience with matters related to surface mining, and has represented various clients before the Railroad Commission of Texas and the Texas General Land Office.

In addition to his professional work, Abney is actively involved in Midland civic life. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors for High Sky Children’s Ranch, as a member of the Board of Trustees of First United Methodist Church of Midland, and on Committee for Young Life Midland. He is also a former Trustee of the Museum of the Southwest, and is a 2003 graduate of Leadership Midland.

A native of Marshall, Texas, Abney received his Bachelor’s of Business Administration in Finance from Southern Methodist University in 1997, graduating cum laude with Honors in Business. Abney earned his law degree in 2000 from the University of Texas School of Law. He is a licensed mediator, and a member of the Midland County Bar Association.

In 2006 and 2007, Abney earned the distinction of being named a Texas Rising Star in energy/oil and gas law
